The history Monastery, holding the treasure of the miraculous icon of “Panagia I Chozoviotissa”, runs back to 9th century AD when the monks, persecuted by Persian tribes, sought refuge for the icon away from its original resting place at St. George Chozevitis’ Monastery, deep in the desserts of the Holy Land.
The Monastery took very long to complete, after many failed attempts. Finally a miracle from “Panagia” (Virgin Mary) allowed the build masters to spot the most proper location. Most of the money required to finish the construction were sent from Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komninos around 1090 AD.
Father Spyridon, current monastery elder, has been serving the Monastery and all the visitors since 1975.
